Our Fort Lauderdale pedestrian accident lawyers understand that highways are dangerous for everyone, but especially for pedestrians. If you ever find yourself on the side of the road, whether you’ve been involved in an accident or your vehicle has broken down, it’s important that you know what to do to stay safe. The first thing you want to do is try to get to the right-hand shoulder of the road as soon as possible, especially if you’re on a highway. As you pull your vehicle off the road, keep the following safety procedures in mind:
-Make sure you get to a safe location. Turn on your emergency flashers and use a flare or cones if posslible to warn oncoming traffic.
-Start making phone calls. Call a friend or a family member to let them know what happened. You also want to call for roadside help. You can call the highway patrol as well for help.
-Roll down the window on the driver’s side, hang out a white cloth or piece of paper, and roll the window back up to secure it in place. This is going to help to alert others that your vehicle is disabled for whatever reason, and they should proceed around you.
-You want to avoid being hit by an oncoming vehicle, so it’s important that you stay away from the side of your vehicle that’s facing traffic.
-If you’re stopped because you got a flat tire, your best bet is to not change it on the side of the road. It’s cheaper to ride on a rim to an auto repair shop than to wind up in the hospital because of an accident.
-Don’t try to make the repairs yourself. It’s likely ineffective and most definitely dangerous.
-If a stranger approaches your vehicle, do not roll down the window or open the car door. Simply crack your window and ask them to call for help.
-Avoid walking to seek safety. You’re at most of a risk for an accident while walking alongside a busy roadway than sitting on the side of the road, inside your vehicle, buckled up.
When you wind up on the side of the road, make sure that staying safe and getting to safety are your top concerns. One wrong move could cost you your life. Be safe.
